What Makes a Web Page Useful?

Posted by mevingham on 12th January 2009

On Friday, I worked with a colleague to create my web page.  I have worked for this school district since May 2007, and I finally figured out how to shape a web page for me.  Instead of going with the school’s traditional web page, I was assigned a My Teacher Page.  The experience was a GREAT one.

First and foremost, I was trained by a good teacher!  Chris showed the patience of a saint.  His web site is a great resource, and I can only imagine to have my page half as useful as his is someday.

I spent a good chunk of time over the weekend working to build the site.  I am not very far into it, but I feel that I have a very good start.  I am struggling with a few issues.

1.  I want to make the site useful beyond our school district.  I am going to publish plans, documents, etc and not be afraid to put “us” out there.  As I began this job a year and a half ago, I went to a lot of local web sites searching for ideas from other curriculum directors.  I found several resources and I want to return the favor.  The way I look it is that other may find it useful and take away something from the documents, or they may decide that the documents don’t match their needs.  Either way they had something to use to compare their goals and criteria against.

2.  I don’t really know what makes a good web page except what makes it good for me.  I always go to sites for contact information, documents, plans, etc.  What do others need from web sites?

3.  I also don’t know what makes a site user-friendly.  I can also find my way around most sites, so I wonder what novice users discover on sites and what attracts or deters them from certain sites.  I would like to run some of my workshops from this site.  I will have to keep all audiences in mind.

Two thumbs up to my teacher and School World for making a tool that is pretty easy to use.  I will have a few flashy things because Chris helped with html code, but other than that, it is straight from the web site tools.  Very cool!
